October 28, 1918 – Postcards to Robert’s father and mother:

Dear Dad,

Am touring at Uncle Sam’s expense. The scenery is beautiful but just got here yesterday so have not seen much yet.

Am enjoying the change immensely.

This postcard shows a chateau in La Mure, France, about 40 km south of Grenoble. It’s still standing today:

Dear Mother,

These are real hills. The weather is real warm. My furlough will be over too soon I fear.

I’ll send my thoughts soon.

Love to all

Located just under 20 km north of Grenoble, Grande Chartreuse is the head monastery of the Carthusian religious order. It was closed in 1903 by the French government but reopened in 1940. Visitors are not allowed, but we do have better photos available these days.
