April 14, 1918 – Full diary entry:
“Woke up at Buffalo. Time passes fast.
Wrote to Dad.
Bread, corn beef, coffee all the way.”
Just guessing here, but this could have been the first time Robert had been this far from home.
I don’t want to overuse this technique, but just to put all of this in perspective again:
– Exactly two months before this entry, on Valentine’s Day, Robert got married despite still being engaged to another woman. His new wife was pregnant.
– 45 days before this entry, Robert left St. Paul for six weeks of training at Camp Dodge, Iowa.
– He’s now more than 700 miles from home, knowing that the next step is to board a ship and fight a war thousands of miles away.
He’s 23 years old.
Where was Robert today? See the timeline.
