April 13, 1918 – Full diary entry:

“Woke up near Chicago, got into sleepers. Saw Lake Michigan.”

I’m sure he did. The train tracks, especially in and around the area between Chicago and Gary, Indiana, wrap around the southern end of Lake Michigan. This map is from 1916. The sleeper car shown here is a Pullman car circa 1910.
