Swimming and Blueberry-Picking (and Artillery)

July 1, 1918 – Full diary entry:

“Signed pay roll.

No drill.

Went swimming.

Picked blueberries on the mountains.

The scenery is beautiful here in the Alps.”

If I’m right about where he was (Saulxures-sur-Moselotte), he was not kidding about the beauty. And even today, a regional specialty (”highly prized by gourmets”) is the wild blueberry tart.
