March 16, 1918 – Full diary entry:

“Worked in Exchange all afternoon. Very hot and dusty.”

And that was mid-March, on a day when the high temperature near Camp Dodge was under 60 degrees F.

Just four years ago, archaeologists were starting to search the sites where Robert and others trained for the war, including the elaborate trenches that were dug to prepare the troops for the kind of warfare they would be experiencing.
