No diary entry today, although there are words written in the “September 20″ section of the diary. But after a LOT of research and thinking it through, I’ve realized that Robert didn’t write anything on September 20-24. I believe he wrote entries on September 25-28 in those spaces instead.

Fortunately, there is a lot of information about these missing days available from other sources. Robert spent today, as yesterday, in the woods near Éclaires. Tomorrow they will move to a French camp and make final preparations for their part in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

This is as good a time as any to put in a plug for the work being done by the U.S. World War One Centennial Commission. This group was formed in 2013 by an act of Congress to plan and develop projects with the goal of educating the public and commemorating the soldiers of the First World War.

The Commission was also tasked with establishing a National World War One Memorial in Washington D.C.  Like me, you may be surprised to learn that there is a national memorial built to honor American soldiers of every war of the 20th century – except for World War One. Fortunately, after plenty of controversy and debate, this is becoming a reality.

I encourage you to visit ww1cc.org to learn about the Memorial, the “Bells of Peace” program and other elements of the upcoming November 11 Armistice Day events, and more. While you’re there, you can donate to the Memorial (which is being built without government funding), browse their online store, and find out how you can participate.
